Conscious Beauty And Beautiful Minds: Interview w/ Imelda Wistey

Imelda Wistey is a writer who enjoys writing about health, wellness, and beauty. Among her other projects, she writes blog content for Kapuluan Coconut, a conscious, eco-friendly company that sells cold pressed raw organic coconut oil from coconut farms in the Philippines. For every product sold, the company plants a coconut tree to assist impoverished coconut farmers with crop production and sustainability.

What was the first beauty routine you adopted as a child or teenager? Which emotions do you connect with this memory?

The first beauty routine I ever adopted as a child was actually using coconut oil. My Filipino grandmother and mother would slather coconut oil all over my body to keep my skin moisturized and my hair healthy and long. As an adult, I still use coconut oil because it ties me emotionally and physically to my Filipino heritage. I feel like I’m on a tropical island in the Philippines with my grandmother again, just like when I was a kid.

CONSCIOUS BEAUTY — What meaning do you give this term?

Conscious beauty is sustainable beauty for human beings and the planet as a whole. My meaning of this term comes from my research on sustainable beauty. Since many individuals want to take care of the earth they live on, research for “conscious,” “eco-friendly,” and “cruelty-free” brands is skyrocketing.

Which aspects of sustainability in beauty are especially important to you?

The aspect of sustainability in beauty that is especially important to me is clean beauty. Whatever I put on my skin must be good for my health and the earth’s health. My skin is very sensitive, so I research beauty brands to ensure that their products are sustainably sourced, cruelty-free, and utilize ingredients beneficial to my skin and overall health.

When do you consciously feel beautiful?

I consciously feel beautiful when I am outside, soaking up the sun with my bare feet on grass or sand, grounding into the earth. It doesn’t matter what I’m wearing or what I look like at that moment. I’m just at peace knowing that I’m part of the earth and its beauty.

Did your approach to beauty change within the last 1–2 years?

My approach changed quite a lot. I used to think beauty was something you worked on to achieve. Now, I approach beauty as a way to take care of my soul. Beauty is not only in the products I use, the clothes I wear, or the way I look. Beauty is in the revelation that everyday is a new discovery of yourself and the world you live in.

How would you like to see the image of beauty change within the next 5 years?

I would like to see the image of beauty continuing to focus on sustainability as well as mental, physical, and emotional health.

What or who inspires your beauty routine?

My mother and grandmother. They are the two amazing, beautiful women who started it all for me.

What is your best beauty advice to others?

Take time to not only see the beauty in yourself, but to see the beauty in the natural world. You can’t help but radiate that beauty when you see it within and all around you.

THANK YOU!
